About San Germán

San Germán is a town you walk through history in. Founded in 1573, it's Puerto Rico's second-oldest settlement — only San Juan is older. Its historic center, a National Historic Landmark, holds two plazas (Plaza Francisco Mariano Quiñones and Plaza Santo Domingo), 1600s-era churches, and a density of criollo and colonial architecture no other town on the island matches.

Iglesia Porta Coeli, built in 1606, is one of the oldest surviving churches in the Americas. The Inter-American University has run a campus here since 1912, giving the town a student life that blends with the slow pace of old colonial cities. San Germán is the closest you'll get to how Puerto Rico looked 400 years ago.

Memory

My family has a house near Plaza Santo Domingo. Walking into town and hearing the birds in the centuries-old trees — I learned that from my abuela and I pass it to my grandkids.

Local Gem

For people who stay only in San Juan: San Germán is the historic city San Juan might have been without all the tourism. Worth the drive west.

FAQ about San Germán

How much time do I need in San Germán?
Half a day covers the two plazas, Porta Coeli, and a walk through the historic district. A full day if you want to eat slowly and step into the historic houses that open to the public.
Is Iglesia Porta Coeli worth it if I'm not religious?
Yes. It's early colonial architecture and religious art from the 17th to 19th centuries — historical rather than devotional interest. Inside it functions as a museum.
