About Villalba

Villalba sits in Puerto Rico's central cordillera, above the south, between Coamo and Juana Díaz to the south, Orocovis to the north, and Jayuya to the northwest. The town settles in a zone of steep mountains with fertile valleys. Lake Toa Vaca, a reservoir built in the 1970s to supply the south with water, defines the landscape and economy — sport fishing, kayaking, recreational areas. Jíbaro culture is central — cuatro music and plena, country criollo food, and a mountain pride that defines the villalbense. Birthplace of several athletes and artists who have carried the town's name across the country and the world.

Memory

My father was a fisherman of the Toa Vaca before it was a lake — when the area was farmland. When the reservoir was built, several families lost homes but we gained a green lung. That contrast is Villalba.

Food Spot

Free-range chicken sancocho with fresh root veg from the farm. My great-great-grandmother's recipe. For a winter Saturday in Villalba, after a cordillera hike. That's happiness.
