About Gurabo
Gurabo sits in eastern Puerto Rico, in a small valley surrounded by hills, between Caguas and Juncos. The town is famous for its staircases — the urban core is built on a slope and many streets are pedestrian flights connecting levels. Home to Universidad Ana G. Méndez (formerly Universidad del Turabo), one of the east's largest university campuses, which keeps a young population, affordable restaurants, and student nightlife. Strong agricultural tradition — the area has historically grown root crops, coffee, and tobacco.

MemoryI studied at Turabo. Climbing those stairs to class every day was free exercise. Four years later, living in Florida, I still dream of the valley view from the top step.
Edgar
Food SpotThere's a fonda near campus that serves yuca mofongo with chicken broth for under $10. Students lined up outside every day. Quality, quantity, price — all good.

Explore CarolinaFAQ about Gurabo
- Why all the staircases?
- Gurabo was built on a very steep hillside. It was more practical to make pedestrian staircases than vehicle streets in some sections. Today they're part of the town's visual identity and have been preserved.
- Is it a good short-visit town from San Juan?
- Yes, 40 minutes via PR-30. Combine it with Caguas for a full day: Caguas museums in the morning, lunch in Gurabo, staircases in the afternoon.
