About Hormigueros

Hormigueros is one of Puerto Rico's smallest towns, but its cultural impact is huge. Here stands the Minor Basilica of Our Lady of Monserrate, a pilgrimage site since the 16th century when, according to tradition, the Virgin appeared to a farmer saving him from a bull. Every September 8 the town fills with pilgrims from across the island — the west's largest patronal festival. Beyond the basilica, Hormigueros has a quiet plaza, honest criollo food, and the feel of a town that has kept its human scale.

My mother climbed the basilica steps on her knees every September 8. A promise so my brother would heal. Forty years later I still climb them — not on my knees anymore, but with the same love.
