About Loíza
Loíza is where Afro-Puerto Rican heritage lives most visibly on the island. Bomba and plena were shaped here; the Fiestas de Santiago Apóstol in late July are the country's most important Afro-Puerto Rican celebration; and the vejigante masks made by local artisans carry centuries of meaning. Few pueblos hold their tradition with the depth Loíza does.
Along the coast, Piñones is one of Puerto Rico's most beloved street-food strips — kioskos serving alcapurrias, bacalaitos, pinchos, and fresh coconut under the seagrape trees. A paved bike path runs the length of it, and the nearby coast stays raw and beautiful. Visit Loíza with respect, and the town gives you a side of Puerto Rico nowhere else does.
