About Río Grande

Río Grande is the rainforest town par excellence: here is the main entry to El Yunque National Forest, the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System. PR-191 enters the forest and leads to famous trails: La Mina Falls, Yokahú Tower, El Yunque Peak. One of Puerto Rico's most important tourist destinations.

Beyond the forest, Río Grande has coast with resorts (Wyndham Río Mar, others), the Río Espíritu Santo with its protected estuary, and accessible beaches. The combination of tropical rainforest, Caribbean coast, and resort isn't found in many other towns — the geography here is unusually dense with options.

Memory

My first El Yunque hike was on an elementary-school trip. La Mina Falls. My teacher told us the forest was unique in the world. That marked me. Today I take my daughter to the same trail.

Adrián

Local Gem

For tourists: El Yunque + kayaking on Espíritu Santo in one day. Start at 7am in the forest, lunch on the coast, kayak in the afternoon. A full and radical day.
